Former Peace Minister and Maoist leader Barshaman Pun claimed that the political parties are close to an agreement on the integration of former Maoist combatants with a concept of setting up a mixed force under the Nepal Army’s aegis.
Pun, who recently give up the ministerial berth to express his dissatisfaction over the cabinet reshuffle, said the modality and schedule for the army integration will be prepared before the May 28 deadline of Constituent Assembly.
He was speaking at a press meet organised at the Reporters Club Nepal in the Capital.
Saying there is no alternative to the CA term extension, Pun suggested that the parties in the CA should apologise to the people for failing to meet the deadline and then extend it once again to complete the constitution drafting.
According to him, if the CA is not extended then the country may have to be through untoward state of affairs with the possibilities of the presidential takeover or the continuance of the incumbent government for a long time.
Speaking the same programme, Nepali Congress leader Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat opposed the idea of mixed force and said his party is in favour of integrating the former combatants on individual basis if they meet the standards set by the security forces.
He said Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal should quit in order to forge national consensus regarding the CA extension.
